Day 4: God's Heart for the Lost

Nov 27, 2025    Pastor Bill Gehm

Devotional:

Jonah's problem wasn't theological confusion—it was a heart problem. He knew God was "gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love," and that's exactly what bothered him. Jonah wanted judgment for his enemies, not mercy. He valued a plant more than 120,000 people.

How often do we mirror Jonah's attitude? We want grace for ourselves but judgment for "those people"—whoever they may be. We're more concerned about our comfort than the lost condition of souls around us. God's response is stunning: "Should I not have concern for that great city?"

God's heart breaks for the lost. The Ninevites—violent, cruel, godless—were still precious to Him. No one is beyond His reach. No city is too wicked for His mercy. The question is: do we share His heart? Are we more grateful for our blessings than burdened for the lost?

Reflection Question: Who in your life do you secretly hope doesn't experience God's mercy? Why?

Application: Pray specifically today for someone you find difficult to love. Ask God to give you His heart for them.
